In a meeting of local Conservative members held in Stakeford on Tuesday Maureen Levy was selected as the Conservative Parliamentary candidate for the new Blyth and Ashington Constituency. Three candidates made presentations to members who live within the new constituency boundaries and then took questions. The ballot was officiated by party officials who announced Maureen as the winner at the end of the evening.
Maureen Levy is married to Ian Levy who was elected as the first Blyth Valley Conservative MP in 2019. Ian Levy was selected last year as the Conservative candidate for the new Cramlington and Killingworth Constituency which takes in over 60% of his current seat.
Maureen Levy commented “I am delighted to have been selected as the Conservative candidate for Blyth and Ashington. I have been at my husband Ian’s side since he was elected as the MP for the old Blyth Valley seat in 2019 whilst he has secured unprecedented investment of over £350 million. The projects that this money funds are well underway and it’s really important we have a Conservative MP in this new seat to make sure they are delivered and to continue the ambitious approach to regenerating our area and improving life and work opportunities for the people who live here. I was born in Blyth and have lived here my whole life and if I am elected I will be entirely focused on improving our area. For too long Labour have been happy to ignore South East Northumberland, choosing only to complain rather than proactively improve things. The election in Blyth & Ashington will be a straight choice between a Corbynite idealogue on the extreme left of the Labour party who does not support Nato and a pragmatic Conservative focused only on local delivery.”
Ian Levy MP commented “I am proud that Maureen has been selected to stand in Blyth and Ashington and I know she will make an excellent MP. That we are both standing demonstrated our commitment to this area. Maureen first encouraged me to stand in the 2017 election after she became fed up with my complaining about the lack of progress under decades of Labour rule. It’s important we don’t go back to square one after all the progress we have made in recent years and I hope I will have the opportunity to work with her to deliver even more for our area.”
